Ballad of Birmingham

This poem is about a little girl waiting freedom but her mum was trying to protect her by saying no but something bad happened even when the mother thought she was doing the right and safe thing.

“She has combed and brushed her night-dark hair”. Half way through the poem it changes from dialogue to a narrator in third person.

The words and phrases which make me realise that the young girl was sweet/innocent/kind are “Mother dear, may I go downtown” this is because she uses words such as “dear” and “may I” which are known as sweet/innocent/kind words.
